        "text": "Taking a cross country flight\n\n\nGreetings, I am Marcus Povey, a seasoned senior full-stack software engineer based in Europe. I have served a diverse clientele, including software houses, financial and governmental institutions, news agencies, and companies of various sizes.\n\n\n\nThroughout my career, I have been instrumental in the development of several mission-critical software systems, including life-saving medical software, secure messaging platforms, high-performance video platforms, and Open Source projects that are widely used globally.\n\n\n\nIn my current role, I lead a talented team of software engineers in developing cutting-edge scientific software across Europe, primarily in the field of structural biology. I work closely with some of the world\u2019s most renowned scientific institutions to deliver innovative solutions that facilitate scientific research. I have also been actively involved in several EU Open Data Access projects aimed at improving the accessibility and reuse of scientific data, including contributing to the global response to the COVID-19 pandemic.  A particular focus of my recent work has been on improving metadata capture and data accessibility to enhance reproducibility, interoperability, and AI-driven analysis in drug discovery. My expertise has been recognized in the industry, and I have been a speaker at numerous scientific conferences, influencing EU data sharing policy.\n\n\n\nAdditionally, I have served as the technical lead for the Elgg project, a widely adopted Open Source social networking platform used by universities, governments, and companies worldwide to streamline internal and external communication. It's actually pretty fun... when you know what you're doing or what you want to do at least. Every day I've been spending a little bit of time after work hacking away at it. It's been a nice distraction from work and doom-scrolling just playing around with CSS &amp; HTML again.         "html": "<p>Sometimes I miss <a href=\"https://cybercultural.com/p/internet-1998/\">the old days of the web</a> when I\u2019d randomly stumble across cool, fun, and sometimes useful sites. And that just so happens to be what I was feeling earlier this year when I stumbled across <a href=\"https://home.omg.lol\">OMG.lol</a>, a cool, fun, and useful IndieWeb playground that also happens to remind me of the old days of the web.</p><p>It\u2019s built and maintained by just <a href=\"https://adam.omg.lol\">Adam</a> and <a href=\"https://home.omg.lol/staff\">a handful of diverse volunteers</a>. Every single tool that OMG.lol provides is there because he wants it to exist, not because he\u2019s looking to get rich at just $20/year. He\u2019s always available, supportive, building or improving something, and standing up to bigots.</p><p>There is quite a lot provided, and I don\u2019t even use it all, so here\u2019s a small breakdown of what I do use:</p><ul><li><strong><a href=\"https://social.lol/about\">Social.lol</a></strong>: One of the reasons that I ran into OMG.lol is that I wanted to move to a paid <a href=\"https://joinmastodon.org\">Mastodon</a> server, after having fled a few that felt under-supported and/or under-moderated. Social.lol is neither. It\u2019s a social safe space on the web, and <a href=\"https://social.lol/@macmanx\">I\u2019m very happy there</a>.</li><li><strong><a href=\"https://some.pics\">Some.pics</a></strong>: I stopped posting to Instagram a year ago, but folks still wanted to see my photos, and both my Mastodon and <a href=\"https://macmanx.tumblr.com\">Tumblr</a> presences are a bit noisy for that. With some.pics, I can share <a href=\"https://macmanx.some.pics\">my photos</a> and provide <a href=\"https://macmanx.some.pics/rss\">an RSS feed</a> that\u2019s just my photos (which I also cross-post to Mastodon with <a href=\"https://echofeed.app\">EchoFeed</a>). It reminds me of early photo sharing sites.</li><li><strong><a href=\"https://status.lol\">Status.lol</a></strong>: This reminds me of early microblogging. <a href=\"https://macmanx.status.lol\">I just pick an emoji and share short text</a>, and folks can follow <a href=\"https://macmanx.status.lol/feed/rss\">with RSS</a> or see my cross-posts on Mastodon.</li><li><strong><a href=\"https://home.omg.lol/info/profiles\">Profile Pages</a></strong>: The profile page is clean and simple. <a href=\"https://macmanx.omg.lol\">Mine</a> just has my avatar, some words, links with icons, and latest status and photo.</li><li><strong><a href=\"https://url.town\">URL.town</a></strong>: Speaking of that old web feel, this is right out of the old days of web directories. Before search engines existed, we had searchable link directories that folks managed.         "text": "Sometimes I miss the old days of the web when I\u2019d randomly stumble across cool, fun, and sometimes useful sites. And that just so happens to be what I was feeling earlier this year when I stumbled across OMG.lol, a cool, fun, and useful IndieWeb playground that also happens to remind me of the old days of the web.\n\nIt\u2019s built and maintained by just Adam and a handful of diverse volunteers. Every single tool that OMG.lol provides is there because he wants it to exist, not because he\u2019s looking to get rich at just $20/year. He\u2019s always available, supportive, building or improving something, and standing up to bigots.\n\nThere is quite a lot provided, and I don\u2019t even use it all, so here\u2019s a small breakdown of what I do use:Social.lol: One of the reasons that I ran into OMG.lol is that I wanted to move to a paid Mastodon server, after having fled a few that felt under-supported and/or under-moderated. Social.lol is neither. It\u2019s a social safe space on the web, and I\u2019m very happy there.Some.pics: I stopped posting to Instagram a year ago, but folks still wanted to see my photos, and both my Mastodon and Tumblr presences are a bit noisy for that. With some.pics, I can share my photos and provide an RSS feed that\u2019s just my photos (which I also cross-post to Mastodon with EchoFeed). It reminds me of early photo sharing sites.Status.lol: This reminds me of early microblogging. I just pick an emoji and share short text, and folks can follow with RSS or see my cross-posts on Mastodon.Profile Pages: The profile page is clean and simple. I bring this up because it could influence what the answer to Johannes\u2019s question is.</p>\n<p>Right now, the clear convention is Mastodon / WebFinger-style handles:</p>\n<p><code>@manton@example.com</code></p>\n<p>There are two problems with this: it looks like an email address, even with the \u201c@\u201d prefix, and it implies identity is usually tied to a server that someone else is running.
