my home server https://aus.social has been inaccessible and returned 502 error for whole evening \ many hours.
I have not seen any 24h upfront notifications about scheduled maintenance. I have not seen a "server on maintenance" page. This left me wonder.
No one advertised here an "X/twitter or other status/downtime/uptime page of a server" .
There is no https://status.aus.social or aus.social/status
Whole situation has been made weirder by https://isup.me which checks for downtime, and "thinks" 502 is normal return code page, marks site as working fine.
So, what exactly happened & what was that maintenance, in technical details?
Is aus.social hosted on single server hardware/vps, because if there was a second server for load balancing - there probably wouldn't be such issue.
Should we expect this situation to repeat?
What is recomended official status page\downtime checker? (that is not hosted on this server and will be accessible in case of downtime)
There is no known contact form with Admin, like IRC\XMPP, outside of Fediverse.
Is server maintained by single person or team or public organisation ?
Also, if it's single person, WHO IS exactly the Admin ?
because this server is advertised and suggested as trusted and reliable on joinmastodon.org , that supposed to communicate to users upfront on any issues.
Also, if you are not on aus.social, but anywhere on fediverse, this is example of how this #fediverse #activitypub is still centralized around single points of failures like DNS, central servers. So my few suggestions to you as user (outside of this issue): Bring your own Server. #Selfhost. You can selfhost static pages for free with #indieweb & activitypub support. Add #hyphanet #scuttlebutt #zeronet keyoxide keybase.io PGP GPG blockchains etherium #p2p #ipfs OrbitDB tox bitmessage jami briar Namecoin http://pubky.tech http://keychat.io to your stack.

Autonomy, independence, federation, WordPress and concrete

I have had to make some behind-the-scenes changes to this website. In the process, I am planning to make it more interoperable with the fediverse and indieweb standards — and I am sticking with WordPress.

About

Thinking of various tech and design trends in terms of a post about nostalgia cycles I wrote a decade ago. (yeah, I know...)

  • 10 years later everything is out of fashion.
  • 20 years later everything's back.
  • 30 years later you have a sense of what to keep and what to toss.

This is why browser sidebars and transparent desktop themes are back after 20 years, and why some of us are stubbornly trying to rebuild the personal web of the 1990s.

Even though my work on @abelio has become a bit stale recently, I'm considering moving it to @hanami
to experiment with #rubyonrails alternatives and step outside my comfort zone for the first time in years.

Any thoughts on this idea?

It would be so nice if maintaining an open source tool paid even a fraction of how much it is glorified lol 😂

I've been distracting myself with something I haven't done in awhile, building a website. It's actually pretty fun... when you know what you're doing or what you want to do at least. Every day I've been spending a little bit of time after work hacking away at it. It's been a nice distraction from work and doom-scrolling just playing around with CSS & HTML again. I'm not going to go overboard or anything (this time), the focus is going to be on actually writing & posting instead of the rabbit hole of endless tweaking that many fall prey to.

While I have the Fediverse, old school Web 1.0 has always held it's sway over me.

Sometimes I miss the old days of the web when I’d randomly stumble across cool, fun, and sometimes useful sites. And that just so happens to be what I was feeling earlier this year when I stumbled across OMG.lol, a cool, fun, and useful IndieWeb playground that also happens to remind me of the old days of the web.

It’s built and maintained by just Adam and a handful of diverse volunteers. Every single tool that OMG.lol provides is there because he wants it to exist, not because he’s looking to get rich at just $20/year. He’s always available, supportive, building or improving something, and standing up to bigots.

There is quite a lot provided, and I don’t even use it all, so here’s a small breakdown of what I do use:

  • Social.lol: One of the reasons that I ran into OMG.lol is that I wanted to move to a paid Mastodon server, after having fled a few that felt under-supported and/or under-moderated. Social.lol is neither. It’s a social safe space on the web, and I’m very happy there.
  • Some.pics: I stopped posting to Instagram a year ago, but folks still wanted to see my photos, and both my Mastodon and Tumblr presences are a bit noisy for that. With some.pics, I can share my photos and provide an RSS feed that’s just my photos (which I also cross-post to Mastodon with EchoFeed). It reminds me of early photo sharing sites.
  • Status.lol: This reminds me of early microblogging. I just pick an emoji and share short text, and folks can follow with RSS or see my cross-posts on Mastodon.
  • Profile Pages: The profile page is clean and simple. Mine just has my avatar, some words, links with icons, and latest status and photo.
  • URL.town: Speaking of that old web feel, this is right out of the old days of web directories. Before search engines existed, we had searchable link directories that folks managed. Some even got pretty big, like Yahoo! URL.town is a searchable link directory that any OMG.lol member can add to, and I’ve been pretty busy.
  • The Community: There’s a vibrant and supportive IRC community (yes, IRC), where folks not only chat about a variety of things, but also watch and sometimes even help Adam work. There’s also a Discourse forum.
  • PURLs: It’s a URL redirecting (and I suppose shortening, depending on the original link) service. I have quite a few of these set up. Changing the 1 redirect link’s destination is easier than changing a bunch of links in a bunch of places.
  • Paste.lol: There’s even a pastebin service! I haven’t made much public use of it yet, but I have used it to quickly share code from time to time.

Those are just the things I use. There’s actually so much more, from a whole blogging platform to sort of a text adventure game.

I would be remiss if I didn’t close by mentioning the generosity of the community. Back in May, a generous community member offered to match most donations, which resulted in the community donating a total of $19,540.54 to causes we cared about. And, until the end of September, Adam is donating half of everything OMG.lol makes (not just half of the profits) to another community member’s fundraiser for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, which has so far raised over $12,000. Many of us have donated as well, so hopefully we can hit our goal of $50,000 in lifetime donations to St. Jude!

If you’re looking for an IndieWeb playground, or even just a taste of the earlier days of the web, check out OMG.lol!

I have restart me #webring #crowdfunding #flipstarter for cross linking #BCH websites. I've reduced the budget by assuming I will write it in Python rather than Rust. And also I stripped a feature or two.

The software will be a functional prototype. If the webring gets enough attention, I will do another flipstarter to write a better software with Rust instead.
