        "html": "<p>Last week a solicitor came to our door selling the usual house upgrades: new roof, windows, even solar panels. Normally I would say no thanks and they would be on their way, but just the day before I had been thinking about solar, so I figured sure, actually I am interested in solar panels one day, maybe in a few years. They can hand me a flyer.</p>\n<p>Somehow I fell into the sales funnel trap. The conversation went from \u201cwe can look at satellite photos of your roof to give you an estimate\u201d to them handing me their phone to talk to the guy who scheduled appointments. It kept escalating from there, a little bit each time, until the next day someone shows up at my door to give me the estimate, but they actually need to come <em>inside my house</em> and go over our electricity bill.</p>\n<p>I\u2019m a patient person, but this had eaten up way too much of my time. I had to turn them away, apologizing as they gave me a guilt trip that they had driven an hour and a half to get here. The whole thing was what I joke about as <a href=\"https://www.manton.org/2023/11/20/delay-fish.html\">delay fish</a>. I could finally see what should\u2019ve been obvious right away: this was all a huge waste of time.</p>\n<p>This is a long introduction to saying that I\u2019m making a couple changes to my social media diet.</p>\n<p>I\u2019ve disabled federation of my blog posts and I\u2019m muting everything I get from Mastodon. Most people are great, but something feels broken over there, divisive, and the risk of getting angry replies is too much right now. I really need to focus.</p>\n<p>An interesting side effect of the Mastodon model is that someone who runs their own community has fewer checks on their influence. They can spread misinformation, but they can\u2019t be reported, because they are also the judge for moderation decisions.</p>\n<p>You could say the same thing about my influence on Micro.blog. This is why I\u2019m extremely careful never to attack other people or stoke any fires of outrage. I want our team to be <a href=\"https://www.manton.org/2025/10/04/nice-walk-with-the-dog.html\">firefighters not arsonists</a>. And of course it\u2019s easy to export your data and move.</p>\n<p>I think someone should explore this in more detail. But for now, back to my decision to have a quieter timeline, with fewer people monopolizing my attention.</p>\n<p>I blogged <a href=\"https://www.manton.org/2025/02/12/new-fediverse-settings-in-microblog.html\">earlier this year</a> about filter bubbles and the new settings in Micro.blog to help you manage how your posts and replies go to the fediverse. This is the first time I\u2019ve actually used the \u201cmute everything\u201d setting. It works!</p>\n<p>There are many ways to follow my blog. RSS, Micro.blog, weekly emails, and cross-posts to Bluesky. And there are multiple ways to get in touch with me. I\u2019m also still getting replies from Bluesky, which automatically show up in the mentions tab in Micro.blog.</p>\n<p>Thanks as always for everyone\u2019s support. Seeya on the open web.</p>",

It\u2019s your first day and of course you\u2019re running late.\n\nYou land at the entrance of the large, nondescript building. It does not have many windows. That might be unsettling for some, but you find it kind of a relief. Still, you hope you don\u2019t get stuck in there for long hours every day. You shiver as you remember your previous job.\n\nAs you approach the door, the RFID scanner beeps. A green light turns on and the door automatically slides open for you. \u201cWhoa, fancy.\u201d\n\nThe ceilings inside are so high. The lighting is better than you expected \u2014 at least they\u2019re not using those obnoxious fluorescent lights. You line up behind a few other tall employees at the metal detector, but a moment later you\u2019re ushered around it by one of the agents. \u201cRobin? You don\u2019t need to go through the metal detector. You\u2019re late, by the way. Not a great look on the first day.\u201d\n\nYou\u2019re led down the hallway until you finally see a door more your size. You slip in quietly and settle in as the presenter continues, \u201c\u2026your spy work will be keeping the country safe.
