Just launched a small project: Quiet Portal - a curated directory of content beyond the big platforms, with a simple tool to follow them without learning RSS. Built it because I wanted an alternative to algorithmic feeds. quietportal.com #indieweb #smallweb #rss #blogging #personalweb

A small update to the RetroStrange TV interface: Assisted by our friends at @TIBtv we now have the "now playing" info updating live on the page! Hooray! #Indieweb #Streaming

@kiko I added some of your links to https://indieweb.org/Hexo today. Feel free to embellish if you wish! Nice to meet you! #IndieWeb

Yikes, apparently its almost spot on 12 years since I launched my #webmention endpoint, but unlike @snarfed.org@bsky.brid.gy’s Bridgy mine has at all been as well maintained.

*checks latest release*

Last release was 6 years ago, so, um, half its time alive has gone since I last pushed an update.

I've been migrating my social media posts over to the new site. A ton of work (and learning curve) but I'm pretty happy with the result.
Since deleting IG, I'm posting very selectively on more open platforms (like Mastodon) and it's nice to keep a self-hosted archive as part of my own blog/site. I even have the full archive of my IG in there now (exported before I deleted it).
Last step, was setting up an automated import for Mastodon.

a few years ago i mentioned that i wrote a book about the exciting, awkward and embarrassing experiences of growing up with computers and video games in the 80s and 90s.

i wanted to remember what it felt like being the only dorky computer kid at school. or what it was like to hear my first modem handshake sound. or starting the first flamewar on the school's national FirstClass BBS in the macintosh lab over the lunch-hour

it was originally something i wrote only for my family and friends who were there at the time.

and then i met all of you folks when i started my first masto instance 4 years ago. i had no idea there were so many hardcore retrocomputing and gaming nerds out there; unix and mac and ms-dos folks alike.

so i mentioned it casually. i was surprised by the interest in the book.

so i spent the better part of the past 3 years rewriting the book for *you* fellow mastodon dorkus malorkuses. the book is a celebration of all of the best (and worst) parts of a kid growing up in the digital age.

we're all busy old tired stressed folks now. so every memory and cringetacular story is short enough to read on a 5 minute bus/metro/toilet ride. they're weaved together into an arc that starts at my family's first Tandy TRS-80 and ends at my school's Mac LC II and building my first Pentium 133.

it's finally published, and i'm super proud of what it became thanks to everyone here nerding out for years.

enjoy the book. i wrote it just for you. ❤️

So I've set up my blog, and I'm feeling quite upbeat about the whole thing.

I've missed the simplicity of old-school blogging.

This is my first time posting a Wikipedia “Edited” year in review, despite having edited Wikipedia for 20+ years (https://tantek.com/2025/300/t20/wikipedia-editing-anniversary).

While this #indieweb version of a year in review was fun to make and look back on, since all the data is public, there’s an opportunity here for a service (perhaps another XTool) or open source project to create such a summary for any Wikipedia editor.

Beyond a nicer presentation than plain text lists and numbers, such a summary could include visuals like a graphs of some of these stats over time, like Wikipedia pages created or edits of various kinds each year.

Until then, I encourage everyone editing Wikipedia to make their own “Edited” (I made that up, feel free to pick a better term) year in review and post it on your personal site! Feel free to re-use any of the design or separation of numbers that I chose, or make up your own.

I had an argument with a book https://britthub.co.uk/i-had-an-argument-with-a-book/

Back in October Zachary Kai resurrected the IndieWeb Book Club, choosing The Creative Act by Rick Rubin. I warned Zachary at the time that I’m a slow reader and it may take me a while to respond. With that sorted I started reading. I didn’t exactly get on with the book. It wasn’t written for […]

I've decided to use Bear Blog for my blog. I like the simplicity and limitations. It reminds me of early blogging platforms that I used to love.

I want something with minimal distractions.

And this from the founder was the clincher:

Fun Pacific HWC #IndieWeb meeting. Some fun links out of last night’s event. Reckoning with “someone asks you how to make a website with a newsletter, how do you respond?” question, and many great ideas, toys, tools shared. https://indieweb.org/events/2026-01-07-hwc-pacific

:kare_library: My web-dedicated bookshelf has just grown with two new additions:

- Niche design, edited by Itay Dreyfus https://nichedesign.press
- Are.na Annual vol. 7: Pool, edited by Meg Miller and Amirio Freeman https://store.are.na/products/are-na-annual-vol-7-pool

All I want to do is to work on my website, but some people are paying me to work on their website instead. Welcome to my life.

#IndieWeb

A rousing call to take back our technology and bring back the old web. I read the entire essay!

As I've been saying for a year or two now, *almost nothing has actually changed* technology-wise between 1995 and 2025. Most of HTML 3.5 still works in any browser. It's super easy to learn. I've got that shit on muscle-memory speed-dial and could whip out a site in notepad in 30 minutes!

Nothing has actually been *taken* from us; we've just been discouraged from using it! A bunch of techbros took up a bunch of space and we just said "ok I guess you make all the spaces now." That's nothing but a culture thing! Manipulation! It's psychological!

So let's self-organize an internet the way we did once before.

#indieweb https://mastodon.world/@paninid/115856932498070536

I've added a #PlainText exporter to my bespoke #StaticSiteGenerator.

Most pages on my site now have .txt counterparts, which for now you can access by appending the extension to the URL directly, e.g. https://balintmagyar.com/colophon.txt

I'd like to look into hosting #GeminiProtocol and/or #Gopher mirrors of my site at some point, and this felt like a logical step towards that. Shout out to @fab for the inspiration!
