Part 2 of Exploring Mastodon is about what specific communities actually feel like from the inside — regional instances, language communities, and craft servers where shared context changes what you can assume when you write.

I've long been on a quest to incorporate personal blogs into my scrolling but could never find a good way to gather and follow interesting ones, esp. ones without RSS.

bubbles.town seems to be what I've been looking for. I just signed up today and have already found some great blogs. It's also part of the fediverse, though not sure exactly how that works. Check it out!

I wrote what Mastodon actually feels like from the inside of a specific community — not the structural case (that was part 1), but what shared context does to what you can write.

some of it is easy to show:

@UnfareSF posts "1:26 PM: Fare inspectors on T headed South from Yerba Buena/Moscone Station Southbound" on sfba.social. no explanation of what the T is. you either ride Muni or this post isn't for you.

→ mastodon.art's AI ban isn't a rule members have to work around. it's a description of who the community is for. an artist posting there knows the person replying also makes things by hand.

the pattern: when a community already knows what you know, you can start further into whatever you're trying to say.

I wrote what Mastodon actually feels like from the inside of a specific community — not the structural case (that was part 1), but what shared context does to what you can write.

some of it is easy to show:

→ a post on mastodon.scot about independence referendum discourse doesn't explain what the SNP is. the community already has that context. the post can start further into the argument.

→ on infosec.exchange, a CVE drops and technical analysis starts within minutes. precision norms mean vague claims get corrected — not hostilely, but by people who think carefully about what can and can't be asserted.

the pattern: when a community already knows what you know, you can start further into whatever you're trying to say.

After using #rss, this has been next good thing for internet.
