Hello fediverse! I build Popsicle Boat, a small independent social site — no ads, no tracking, free.

Its favorite trick: being the comment section for blogs that don't run one. Your blog gets a space, posts you choose get a discussion thread, and one link is the whole integration. One post a month, one post a year, one post ever — all fine.

My blog does this: https://jva.lol/weblog/popsicle-boat-as-a-comment-section/

#introduction
Hello, I'm a (currently unemployed #getfedihired?) software engineer. I suppose most of my interests are the typical nerdy stuff, such has #3dprinting (I've finally finished building a Voron 3d printer!), #electronics and #microcontroller programming, #fpv drones, #selfhosting, #privacy, #scifi and, of course, #computerscience/#softwareengineering. My professional experience is mostly full-stack web/mobile dev, DevOps, and applied AI/ML.

I recently discovered the #indieweb, which seemed really cool to me, so I created an artisanal, hand-crafted personal site: https://e4dt4n.com. It ain't much, but it's honest work.

👻 How long would you last inside a haunted house?

Our Haunted House Survival Calculator is a fun interactive tool that estimates your chances of escaping based on your choices, courage, and survival instincts.

🏚️ Give it a try:

What's your survival percentage? I'd love to hear your results!

Writers and bloggers, does this happen to you?

You sit down to write a weeknote or some journal entry, but suddenly, one of the topics becomes really long and you decide to split that off into its own separate post. You continue with your original piece (back to square one); but it happens again. 😅

Link at end but I mean, you know what? Maybe we should force average users to at least understand the basics of, hey, do you know how your podcast updates? Via RSS. I'm starting to roll my eyes at gimics like this. > That led to HyperTexting, an app that leverages RSS under the hood but doesn’t promote the protocol in its marketing, while also providing a way to easily post to your own website. https://hypertexting.com/ #RSS #IndieWeb

In a HTML archive style it would be more obvious – one would link to the Twitter users, no need for any kind of reciprocity and ATProto is not too far of from being the IndieWeb in a JSON store with did-identifiers – if one can reference people using http links in addition to did-id:s then 🙌

Coyote has a new essay out about comment culture. Worth a read if you think fandom is quieter now, that people don't comment as often as they used to and why that might be.

For the last couple of months, the site was using the JetBrains Mono webfont because I like how it looks. However, the two fonts doubled the weight of almost every page. I've decided to stop using the webfont; it'll only show if the reader has JetBrains Mono installed on their machine. Otherwise, the default monospace is used to display the site's text.

🔒 New blog section: Privacy

This week we're covering Chat Control: how version 1.0 got renewed through a procedural loophole in the European Parliament, timed right before summer recess, and why version 2.0 could mean the end of online anonymity in the EU.

Signal has already warned it would leave Europe if this passes.

I would like to start my own website one day. I'm thinking that my website would have a few static pages such as homepage and contact page, a page that would show my artworks with pagination and a blog. I'm most likely going to be writing the frontend with just vanilla HTML and CSS, no JavaScript framework to keep it simple. If I must use a JS framework however, I'll go with Vue.

Thing is, concerning the page that shows my artworks, I kind of dislike the idea of manually editing the HTML to add a new entry of a new piece of art that I just made, same thing when it comes to blog. it feels... bad and it seems like it would be a maintenance nightmare.

I'm thinking that I would use a lightweight database engine like SQLite 3 when it comes to the artwork and blog part, but I wonder if even using a DB engine in the first place is already overkill for a small personal website.

Which web framework would be right for my specific needs? And which hosting should I use? I want to avoid relying on big tech, so no Google Cloud and AWS and this also includes GitHub Pages because GitHub is owned by MS. I don't mind having to code because I know how to code.

I don't mind paying a few euros for hosting. A free option is a bonus, but I am open to paid options as well. (actually I would prefer paid hosting, see thread below)

I'm new to hosting a website and web development, so help would be welcome.
