Today I\u2019ve added following users and cross-posting from your blog to Grain.</p>\n<p>When you follow a Bluesky user in Micro.blog by searching for their handle, like <code>username.bsky.social</code>, we now aggregate both their Bluesky posts and their Grain photo galleries together in the timeline.</p>\n<p>Micro.blog is a universal social timeline. Follow users on the fediverse, atmosphere, and blogs so you see all their posts in one place.</p>\n<p>The other side of this is automatic cross-posting to Grain, similar to our cross-posting to Pixelfed. When a blog post contains photos, Micro.blog can publish them as a photo gallery for Grain users.</p>\n<p>You\u2019ll see \u201cAdd Grain\u201d as an option on the Sources page if you already have Bluesky enabled. We simply reuse the existing authorization.</p>\n<p>Why Grain.social now? More platforms appear to be building on one of the atmosphere\u2019s unique features: storing custom data formats in your account, tied to an identity that is shared across apps.         "html": "<p>Let\u2019s consider where the open web has the greatest opportunity over the next decade, starting with these rough numbers:</p>\n<ul><li><strong>Blogs:</strong> 600 million total blogs</li>\n<li><strong>X:</strong> 550 million monthly users</li>\n<li><strong>Threads:</strong> 500 million monthly users</li>\n<li><strong>Bluesky:</strong> 44 million total users</li>\n<li><strong>Mastodon:</strong> 10 million total users</li>\n</ul><p>The comparison is a little bit <em>apples and oranges</em> because the ad-supported platforms only care about monthly active users. There are other obvious caveats such as how many blogs get more than one post every year. That\u2019s okay for the purposes of this post.</p>\n<p>Blogging is the backbone of the open web. It\u2019s not a throwaway stat. Blogs in total are already comparable in scale to the biggest networks.</p>\n<p>Dave Winer <a href=\"http://scripting.com/2026/07/22/202118.html\">posted yesterday</a>: \u201cI use twitter these days because it\u2019s where the people are\u201d. Some people would say the same thing about Threads. Both of those platforms are dead-ends for openness, but still useful for many people.</p>\n<p>If I were thinking about where to invest my time to make the web a little better \u2014\u00a0and I am, every day \u2014\u00a0then there are two paths implied by these numbers:</p>\n<ul><li>Make blogs easier to use for short posts. This brings the convenience of social media to the open web.</li>\n<li>Make it appealing for X and Threads users to move to Bluesky. AT Proto is an open foundation that already supports blogging apps like Leaflet and Pckt.</li>\n</ul><p>I told someone privately this week that I\u2019ve become disillusioned with Mastodon. For all the great work that fediverse developers are doing, and the fact that the fediverse is built on open standards, my concern is that Mastodon is a permanent niche. It\u2019s going to take a monumental effort to change this.</p>\n<p>Where does Micro.blog fit in all of this? It\u2019s a tiny slice of the \u201c600 million total blogs\u201d number.
