The internet used to be* fun • Kwon.nyc https://kwon.nyc/internet/ #IndieWeb #Internet
The open web has an amazing amount of free content that is actually free, both freely accessible without payment and free of conditions to access. No tracking cookies needed, no logins needed, no ads needed.
A few examples:
* blogs. my blog, and every other #indieweb blog (with the exception of sites hosted on content services that show ads without the consent of the blogger). Personal blogs are free to read because it’s a hobby and a way of keeping up with family, friends, colleagues, acquaintances, people we’ve met once at a conference, people that inspire us.
* Wikipedia is free, largely donor supported, partly via donation banners.
* Open Street Maps is free, similarly.
* Internet Archive is free, similarly.
* Government sites are free, supported by taxes.
* Public library sites are free, similarly.
* Museum sites are free, supported by their donors, and in-person visit fees.
* University sites are free, supported by endowments and student tuitions.
There is plenty of free content on the open web, sustainably supported by non-toxic and non-surveillance models.
The open web as a whole does not depend on any particular business model.

On 15 February 2013, Posterous published a post announcing it would shut down on April 30.
Here is that post, on my blog, in 2026 — text, dates and links intact, pulled out of the Internet Archive's crawls of a feed that stopped being served thirteen years ago.
The platform is gone. Its goodbye note isn't.

Planning a major expansion to how AT Proto works in Micro.blog. Just as every account gets a fediverse handle by default, I’d like to host a PDS for new users. People could keep it or bring their Bluesky-hosted account instead (which is how it already works).

✨ Web Wanderings Edition #24 is out
A fresh little batch of interesting websites to explore, save, and enjoy at your own pace. If you feel like finding something new today, this one is for you. 🤓
That feeling when you finally figure out exactly what the error you're getting when trying to authorize means, only to realize that there really isn't an easy fix and that it definitely isn't happening during this afternoon. #indieweb
Two brightness problems. One tiny Mac app.
Outside, macOS max is often not enough.
At night, the minimum is still too bright.
LUMEL pushes supported displays further in both directions — brighter outdoors, darker after dark.
No account. No subscription. No tracking.
Built because my screen should match the room I am in.
