This is stunning. This is what peak privilege looks like on the internet---the fact that a blogger would never even think for a second everyone wouldn't be nice in a chat box. Man, privilege is one hell of a drug. My hope is that maybe he will empathize with marginalized users more, but it rarely happens because they get a taste of what is every Tuesday for us. It also harkens back to the comment discourse on the IndieWeb. If you have so much privilege that you can enable comments on a blog, amazing. Stunning. I will never know what that is like. https://en.andros.dev/blog/b6c32a90/i-added-a-real-time-chat-to-my-blog-people-used-it-to-attack-me/ #IndieWeb #Internet #Bully #Harassment

The open web has an amazing amount of free content that is actually free, both freely accessible without payment and free of conditions to access. No tracking cookies needed, no logins needed, no ads needed.
A few examples:
* blogs. my blog, and every other #indieweb blog (with the exception of sites hosted on content services that show ads without the consent of the blogger). Personal blogs are free to read because it’s a hobby and a way of keeping up with family, friends, colleagues, acquaintances, people we’ve met once at a conference, people that inspire us.
* Wikipedia is free, largely donor supported, partly via donation banners.
* Open Street Maps is free, similarly.
* Internet Archive is free, similarly.
* Government sites are free, supported by taxes.
* Public library sites are free, similarly.
* Museum sites are free, supported by their donors, and in-person visit fees.
* University sites are free, supported by endowments and student tuitions.
There is plenty of free content on the open web, sustainably supported by non-toxic and non-surveillance models.
The open web as a whole does not depend on any particular business model.

No algorithmic profile, no Web Wander account, no endless feed. Web Wander stores settings locally and sends each click toward an original corner of the web. Nearly two dozen sources, 50+ categories, Chrome + Firefox.

The web gets wonderfully strange once you leave the feed. Web Wander is a one-click browser extension for discovering original sites across 50+ categories—no Web Wander account required. Free for Chrome + Firefox: bigo.ooo/web-wander/ #IndieWeb #OpenWeb

On 15 February 2013, Posterous published a post announcing it would shut down on April 30.
Here is that post, on my blog, in 2026 — text, dates and links intact, pulled out of the Internet Archive's crawls of a feed that stopped being served thirteen years ago.
The platform is gone. Its goodbye note isn't.

I've tested another new small web website hosting option.
How to host your website on pages.gay

The IndieWeb probably has the best examples of this via indieauth.com because it's either you roll your own OAuth for your data or you use a provider but it's all the same: ask for consent and get proof of said permission.
