RSS Wranglin’ in the Age of AI

AI has changed how I approach and interact with the internet including my RSS subscriptions. My heavily curated archive of RSS feeds are now being corralled and prioritized (or often deprioritized) based on AI.

You pick the sources. You mute the words you are done hearing about. Every story Muuted hides lands in a list with the exact reason it was caught, so nothing disappears on you quietly.

No algorithm. Nothing built to keep you scrolling. It tells you when you are caught up.

Free account: 50 sources, 20 muted words. Pro is $4/mo or $36/yr, and the first 50 accounts get 6 months of Pro free — 33 seats left.

My #HTMLday creation!

It was very freeing to write from scratch compared to using a #SSG. I ought to do it more often!

PS. Had a horrid time trying to publish a plain HTML page bypassing #Hugo templates/layout lookup order. It works in `hugo server` but not when running `hugo`. I resorted to just putting the HTML in the static folder.

Ricardo Mendes:

Sometimes I’m wondering, what would be the cost of stopping supporting the Mastodon API layer and instead work towards proper implementation of client to servers opening the route for a universal mobile app for #fedify based AP implementation.

The Mastodon API is a dead-end. It’s too specific to Mastodon. Client apps should be using either Micropub or ActivityPub client-to-server API, both W3C standards.

Brennan Day: Free Speech and the IndieWeb. “A couple days ago, I wrote the blog post titled ‘Five Interesting Indie Platforms You Might Not Have Heard Of’. I was really happy with it—being able to share the work of others that deserve support and can help foster digital indie communities. But, regrettably, I had to rescind one of my recommendations. Let me explain.”

@tantek.com Question: is a web site free if you have to register to leave a comment?

#indieweb

This is stunning. This is what peak privilege looks like on the internet---the fact that a blogger would never even think for a second everyone wouldn't be nice in a chat box. Man, privilege is one hell of a drug. My hope is that maybe he will empathize with marginalized users more, but it rarely happens because they get a taste of what is every Tuesday for us. It also harkens back to the comment discourse on the IndieWeb. If you have so much privilege that you can enable comments on a blog, amazing. Stunning. I will never know what that is like. https://en.andros.dev/blog/b6c32a90/i-added-a-real-time-chat-to-my-blog-people-used-it-to-attack-me/ #IndieWeb #Internet #Bully #Harassment

The open web has an amazing amount of free content that is actually free, both freely accessible without payment and free of conditions to access. No tracking cookies needed, no logins needed, no ads needed.

A few examples:
* blogs. my blog, and every other #indieweb blog (with the exception of sites hosted on content services that show ads without the consent of the blogger). Personal blogs are free to read because it’s a hobby and a way of keeping up with family, friends, colleagues, acquaintances, people we’ve met once at a conference, people that inspire us.
* Wikipedia is free, largely donor supported, partly via donation banners.
* Open Street Maps is free, similarly.
* Internet Archive is free, similarly.
* Government sites are free, supported by taxes.
* Public library sites are free, similarly.
* Museum sites are free, supported by their donors, and in-person visit fees.
* University sites are free, supported by endowments and student tuitions.

There is plenty of free content on the open web, sustainably supported by non-toxic and non-surveillance models.

The open web as a whole does not depend on any particular business model.

On 15 February 2013, Posterous published a post announcing it would shut down on April 30.

Here is that post, on my blog, in 2026 — text, dates and links intact, pulled out of the Internet Archive's crawls of a feed that stopped being served thirteen years ago.

The platform is gone. Its goodbye note isn't.
