        "text": "If any of your communities use Slack, especially the \u201cfree\u201d version, once in a while Slack seems to temporarily upgrade your \u201cSlack team\u201d to their \u201cPRO\u201d version (for 30 days).\n\nIn the Slack mobile app, you may see a dismissible banner like:\n\n\u201cPRO: Your team is on a free trial\u201d\n\nThis is your chance to go back and manually archive or follow-up on old dms and \u201csaved\u201d posts.\n\nIf you happen to use the bookmarks (AKA \u201cLater\u201d or \u201cSave for later\u201d) feature to collect Slack posts that you want to follow-up on later, you may have noticed that any such \u201csaved\u201d posts older than 30 days are usually no longer viewable.\n\nWhen your Slack instance is on a PRO free trial, you can once again view these older posts.\n\nUse this opportunity to go through any saved posts older than 30 days (maybe older than 15 days to give yourself a buffer, or all of them to clear them out) and decide what to do with them.\n\nIf there is anything about them you still want to save (for reference), copy them somewhere else accordingly, or if you saved them as a reminder to follow-up, copy them to a persistent plain text inbox, or if following-up will only take a few minutes, then take care of them.\n\nThe other thing you get longer term access to are direct messages (dms).\n\nSlack PRO provides you full access to your (potentially years of) dms, instead of only the past 30 days worth. Making nginx use blocklistd

There is a more elegant solution which is much less known, called blocklistd.\n\n</p><p><strong>tl;dr</strong>: <a href=\"https://code.petermolnar.net/ngx-http-blocklistd\">https://code.petermolnar.net/ngx-http-blocklistd</a></p>\n<p>I wrote about having fun with bots and scapers before that I brought\nupon myself by having <code>nepenthes</code> added to my server<a href=\"https://petermolnar.net/#fn1\">1</a>. As things currently stand, unless\nyou want to or can afford A LOT OF traffic, you shouldn't do what I\ndid.</p>\n<p>Anyhow, now that all the links are removed from everywhere it means\nthat there's a certain path prefix that I know 100% sure it's nasty bot\ntraffic and I'd be happy to block the IP immediately if it ends up\nthere.</p>\n<p>The last time I tried fail2ban, my CPU got overloaded. I then tried\nblocking at ASN level<a href=\"https://petermolnar.net/#fn2\">2</a>, but I regularly ended up blocking\nM$, Google Cloud, and other things, eventually blocking some of the\nindieweb tooling<a href=\"https://petermolnar.net/#fn3\">3</a> from accessing my site with that\nblast radius.</p>\n<p>I have turned to <code>blocklistd</code><a href=\"https://petermolnar.net/#fn4\">4</a>\n(formerly called <code>blacklistd</code>) for blocking SSH and Postfix\nattempts, because it has it built in. It's a (Net)BSD security tool that\nlistens on a socket for messages with IPs to be blocked by your\nfirewall. In a sense it does the same job as fail2ban, but with much\nless overhead: it doesn't need logs to be writter, logs to be read and\nparsed, and it's written in C.</p>\n<p>The nginx module that communicates to blocklistd didn't exist, so I\ndecided to write it.         "html": "<p>If any of your communities use Slack, especially the \u201cfree\u201d version, once in a while Slack seems to temporarily upgrade your \u201cSlack team\u201d to their \u201cPRO\u201d version (for 30 days).<br /><br />In the Slack mobile app, you may see a dismissible banner like:<br /><br />\u201cPRO: Your team is on a free trial\u201d<br /><br />This is your chance to go back and manually archive or follow-up on old dms and \u201csaved\u201d posts.<br /><br />If you happen to use the bookmarks (AKA \u201cLater\u201d or \u201cSave for later\u201d) feature to collect Slack posts that you want to follow-up on later, you may have noticed that any such \u201csaved\u201d posts older than 30 days are usually no longer viewable.<br /><br />When your Slack instance is on a PRO free trial, you can once again view these older posts.<br /><br />Use this opportunity to go through any saved posts older than 30 days (maybe older than 15 days to give yourself a buffer, or all of them to clear them out) and decide what to do with them.<br /><br />If there is anything about them you still want to save (for reference), copy them somewhere else accordingly, or if you saved them as a reminder to follow-up, copy them to a persistent plain text inbox, or if following-up will only take a few minutes, then take care of them.<br /><br />The other thing you get longer term access to are direct messages (dms).<br /><br />Slack PRO provides you full access to your (potentially years of) dms, instead of only the past 30 days worth. Most searches move a few MB.
