Content warning:Reply: Re: Domains Cost More, Blogs Disappear
While bemoaning the rising cost of domain names, Michael also observed that blogging and personal websites are suffering a lack of young newcomers. In my reply I disagree, saying that they're there... just not where he's looking for them!

Weird web thing: I've noticed recently that the majority of my hits are from Singapore coming through Kagi. I have Singapore fully blocked at the WAF level (thinking they had to be bots), but they're still getting through.
The hits seem to be directly to recent blog posts, so I'm suspecting it's coming through the Kagi Small Web search.
Anyone else seen this?

🎉 Drift — Share to Mastodon is officially live on the Chrome Web Store!
Yesterday I wrote about why I built Drift. Today, version 1.0.0 is approved and available for anyone to install.
Drift makes one of my common Mastodon workflows a lot easier:
🔹 Highlight a passage on a webpage
🔹 Click Drift
🔹 Get an editable draft with the passage, title, and link
🔹 Add your own thoughts
🔹 Choose your Mastodon server
🔹 Review and publish from Mastodon itself
It also supports right-click sharing, multiple saved servers, tracking-link cleanup, temporary draft recovery, keyboard shortcuts, and light/dark mode.
No Mastodon password. No API token. Nothing gets published automatically.
It’s free and open source.
Chrome Web Store:
https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/gfngoampnddkablfoplbllkdcfkifnij
I wrote more about how it works and the privacy decisions behind it here:
https://www.kylereddoch.me/blog/drift-share-to-mastodon/
If you try it, I’d genuinely love to hear what you think.

You can't outbid page one. An auction goes to whoever gains most from the spot, and that was never the person who made the thing best. Here's the merchant half of Search Decay, and a search bar that sells no slot.

You can still look at the very first version of adactio.com if you want to wallow in the glory days of framesets and DHTML. But it was twenty five years ago that I started publishing my thoughts here, making adactio.com my online home.\n\nThe funny thing is, I distinctly remember when I started writing that I was getting into this whole blogging thing really late. In today’s session of #IMadeAThing: #Songhive
This is a project that has taken me quite some work in the past months and it’s finally ready to be announced.
Imagine a fully federated (compatible with #ActivityPub and #Webmentions) social network built on top of your music collection.
Not something like #Funkwhale, which only allows individual tracks, albums or playlists to be federated, but a real social network where you have a real profile that can comment, like, boost and quote tracks and anything and follow anyone on any server.
Add custom user-managed audio streams on top of it, with support also for #Icecast and #Snapcast, so you can play your radio with your favourite songs in loop and share an .mp3 link with your friends.
Add support for flexible storage, so you can hook an S3 bucket, a Google Drive, a Dropbox account, a Nextcloud folder, and your music from that storage will be immediately available to be streamed and shared through your server.
Add support for external music services, so you can hook your Jellyfin server or TIDAL account and get your collection all in one place.
Add support for podcasts synchronized over gPodder because why not.
Add support for the #Subsonic API so you can stream your music from your server from Substreamer or any compatible Android/iOS app, and a #mopidy extension to allow you to plug Songhive into your existing music server.
And, most importantly, add support for payments. On two sides:
For sysadmins: hosting a media server isn’t free, and often it’s not even cheap. Many open-source solutions lack integration with Stripe or crypto and handling of subscriptions. This doesn’t give many incentives to someone to run a small media server for their friends or their band. Songhive provides a paid mode for registration_mode. Admin can set how much they want to charge their users to upload content on their server and how often (weekly, monthly, yearly…)
For musicians: Songhive supports Stripe Connect integration with the ability to wire any number of payout accounts to the main account on the server. It means that musicians can connect their Stripe account, and set any songs or albums they want for sale for any price they want. Call it the federated #Bandcamp killer if you wish

I found an old screenshot from four years ago: a minimalist weblog concept I’d sketched out. It’s finally finding a home on Faunder’s new site, as a simple stream of photos, links, quotes and short notes. Nice when an old idea clicks into place. #IndieWeb #WebDesign

I'm chipping away at my #IndieWeb site. I haven't added any css or styles yet. I've been working on #microformats2 and #IndieAuth, so I can use it as an identity and eventually syndicate. I'm about to start on #webMentions. I think adding a guestbook and maybe a chat widget would be cool.

Gifts for her, every one under fifty dollars as we post this: puzzles, notebooks, a tea cozy, a lip and cheek stick, and a trinket dish. All from independent stores.

Several good #IndieWeb events this week. If you're in #Edinburgh you could attend in person in a few hours. But there are plenty of others. See events.indieweb.org ~ we're typically a welcoming bunch. You can follow all the events by calendar or limit it to specific tags.
