ilyess: My Quest for IndieWeb Citizenship. “Browsing the internet, I landed on the IndieWeb site and went exploring that philosophy. I wasn’t new to the concept, but up until then I hadn’t taken the time to dig deep and really understand what it was all about. I knew it had to do with microformats — conventional HTML tags bloggers use to annotate information on their sites — and POSSE […]

> So if you don't like that I used #Claude to help build the replacement, that's fine! You can treat it as though I shut down the service and go find an alternative, because that is what would have happened anyway.

Well poop. I guess I won't be using #webmentions until I find a solution

I've been working on the layout of lzon.ca for a few days. I wanted to improve the look, but also make the whole site more cohesive.

It's still a work in progress but I've deployed what I've done so far which I think looks nice. Constructive criticism is very much welcome (as well as gushing praise 😉).

Why I'm rebuilding my IndieWeb projects with Claude

I recently came across Brennan's post noticing that Claude Code has been showing up in the commit history of a bunch of my IndieWeb projects lately. That's true! I was wondering when someone would notice. I haven't been hiding it, but I also haven't written anything about why I'm doing it, so this seemed like a good time to finally get my thoughts down.

“I want to read words written by my fellow humans, from their hearts and minds, through the effort of trying to clearly express what it is they’re trying to communicate, because in that effort, they figure out what it is that they actually think and want to say.” — Andrea Badgley

I'm again thinking about not having all my blog posts in my rss feed. What do you think? How do you do it as a blogger? What do you prefer as a reader?

Feel free to comment.

The Power of Decentralization (and Self-Hosting)

The Power of Decentralization (and Self-Hosting)

Most social networks live inside a single company's servers. One owner, one
policy, one point of failure. Decentralization changes that.

Instead of one central platform, the network is made of many independent
servers — called instances — that talk to each other using open protocols
like ActivityPub. You pick your server, keep your identity, and can still
follow and interact with people on other servers. It's like email: you use
Gmail, I use a private server, and we still reach each other.

Why it matters

  • No single point of failure — if one server goes down, the rest of the
    network keeps running.
  • You own your account — your identity isn't locked inside one company.
  • Real choice — pick a server with rules and a community that fit you.
  • Censorship resistance — no single entity can silence the whole network.
  • Longevity — communities survive even when individual servers come and go.

Why self-hosting matters

Decentralization is only as real as the people willing to run their own
nodes
. When you self-host, you don't just use the network — you are the
network. Everything runs on hardware you control, with your own rules, your own
data, and no third party in the middle.

  • Full control — you decide the software, the policies, the upgrades.
  • Data stays with you — no cloud provider owns or scans your community.
  • Independence — no monthly fees to a platform, no sudden shutdowns.
  • Learning by doing — you understand the stack you depend on.
  • A stronger whole — every self-hosted node makes the network more
    resilient and harder to break.

Decentralization isn't just a technical detail. It's a shift of power from
platforms back to people — and self-hosting is how you take that power.

About niwego.com: this instance is fully self-hosted and has been
running for more than 2 years. It runs on nothing more than an old
HP ProDesk 600 G4 Mini PC — no data center, no cloud, no huge budget. Just
a small box in a home, proving that the decentralized, self-hosted web is real,
sustainable, and within everyone's reach.

I’m looking for some formatting help with HTML and CSS.
These are the IDEAS I have, I drew them to convey what I want the output to be.

How though could I structure this so that it renders in html and css with the desired drawn implementation

POSSE — Publish (on your) Own Site, Syndicate Elsewhere is an old IndieWeb idea that holds up remarkably well for companies too.

Own the canonical copy. Share links wherever conversations happen.

It's the principle behind Contlify's publishing destinations: your site or your WordPress install, not a hosted platform.
