as a casual normie what other software can I use that has pixel perfect rulers everywhere? I don't want to make any accounts though πŸ’”

design choice I keep coming back to with Persistwise: it shouldn't ask anyone to move their blog. it just reads your RSS feed every 15 minutes and saves a copy of each new post, so you keep writing wherever you already do

πŸ”– Bookmarked: Winnie Lim Β» running a personal website is not fun anymore https://winnielim.org/journal/running-a-personal-website-is-not-fun-anymore/

Rough read. Between out of control AI bots scraping the fuck out of the open web and hackers using AI agents to rapidly expose more vulnerabilities, it's getting tough to run and manage your own website! No wonder it's not fun anymore.

#11ty is so simple yet powerful that I want to resurrect my blog in the form of tech notes. Without all that blah-blah, just what and how. There are also a lot of how-tos that have been collected in my Obsidian vault. I feel the urge to publish them as well.

Is #11ty an #indieweb?

🍷 Around 30,000 bottles of wine stolen in Italy, possibly the biggest wine theft in history. How do you steal that much, and what do you do with it afterwards? My take on the blog πŸ‘‡

I never really liked #IndieWeb (with capital I and W), as it always felt riddled with single points of failure. I’m not happy though that my assessment was correct.

Aaron Parecki, one of the main creators of many of its services (that other people built their sites around) recently decided to rewrite everything with Claude. Even his post admitting it was drafted with AI.

I sympathize with what Brennan had to say about it:

https://brennan.day/the-better-web-the-human-web-the-living-web/

Thing I learned building a link checker for static blogs: a lot of sites block requests coming from GitHub's runners, so a naive checker flags perfectly fine pages as dead. Linkguard marks those as blocked instead, and for links that really are gone it looks up a Wayback copy you can swap in. https://linkguard.persistwise.com

My episode on the Web Weaving podcast

In Episode 24, I chat with Alex, the author of alexsirac.com about, among other things, collective intelligence in public commons, what the IndieWeb can learn from Wikipedia, community in comments, and more. Huge thanks to James for hosting a conversation with me on his Web Weaving podcast! We were supposed to talk about multilingual blogging, but we got completely sidetracked. Listen (or read the excellent transcript, thanks so much Zachary!) to the episode to hear about what bloggers can […]

It's been discussed at length the extent to which Big Tech search engines/indexers are basically garbage at this point. Even using a wrapper like Duckduckgo, which re-arranges the results from a Google + Bing search, the usefulness of these tools is really in decline compared to how well they *used to work* (that is to say, we know for a fact that a better quality is possible on a technical level!)

It's been of course noted that the feasibility of running your own web indexer is simply too high of a bar for typical folks to clear. The web is literally just too big. There's too many links, too many pages, and all too much text to store in a cache. Not even to mention the work required to keep it up to date by doing regular crawling.

So, what about a search engine that only aims at a portion of the web? When we remove all of the big players like social media (Reddit, Twitter, etc), large forums (StackOverflow, etc), major wikis (Wikipedia, fandom wiki, etc), and large news outlets (The New York Times, AP News, etc) -- what's left?

Say we let W be the set of all pages on the web. We know that len(W) is too big to store on something that isn't a giant datacenter. What about storing (W - M), the set of all pages *minus* all the pages from major web domains (as discussed above)? How big is len(W - M)? Is it reasonable, or would you have to truncate even further, taking only a subset of (W - M)?

added a cute lil "recent commits" panel to my home page! ^-^ i'm using nextjs, so at build time my home page has a `getStaticProps` function that pulls the five most recent git commits and formats them into JSON, which are then provided to the component.
