I just wish I\u2019d given myself an \u201cout\u201d (I\u2019ve talked about this before). Like maybe I get up to 4 \u201cskips\u201d per month or something like that. Or I allow myself to take a few days break every quarter.</p>\n\n<p><strong>I\u2019ll definitely be tweaking this schedule</strong> at some point in the near future. I\u2019m just not sure yet if I want to get to the full year for <em>the ultimate bragging rights</em>, or if I want to say enough is enough and make the change earlier.</p>\n\n<p>What do you think?</p>",

And I\u2019d certainly be doing a bunch of those things right the fuck now if, y\u2019know, money were no object.</p>\n\n<p>Bear in mind I\u2019m not talking about things people do for leisure, as a hobby, when they retire, etc. I\u2019m talking about <strong>real work projects</strong>. Like opening an electronic music venue. Founding a meditation retreat center. Showing gallery-quality fine art figure photography. A line of off-the-wall herbal-infused organic juices. A new \u201cvan life\u201d campground in the desert outside Bend, Oregon.</p>\n\n<p>Trust me, I have enough ideas bouncing around my brain to last several lifetimes, and many of them I\u2019ve already been dreaming of for many years. Whatever I\u2019m lacking in life, <a href=\"https://jaredwhite.com/tag/creativity\">#creativity</a> ain\u2019t it. \ud83d\ude05</p>\n\n<p><strong>So the question is:</strong> how long is it going to take before I <em>snap</em> and just start <em>doing</em> one or more of these things? I left the screening thinking I had just seen the best movie about the search for love in many years.</p>\n\n<p>Call it a romcom, call it a romdram or any shorthand attempt to categorize it, but this is a movie that defies that kind of easy description.</p>\n\n</blockquote>\n\n<p>I wouldn\u2019t actually recommend you read all of Pete Hammond\u2019s review for Deadline of <em>Materialists</em> as it gives away too many spoilers (IMO), but I absolutely agree with his assessment that this is \u201cthe best movie about the search for love in many years.\u201d</p>\n\n<p>Dakota Johnson gives a stellar performance in this film, perhaps her best out of the many <a href=\"https://jaredwhite.com/tag/movies\">#movies</a> I\u2019ve seen her in. (Truth be told, I\u2019m a big Johnson fan, but I do think she can be a bit one-note. The sharp writing and expert direction in <em>Materialists</em> gives her a lot to work with, and I was quite impressed by her range in this as I was Chris Evans as well.)</p>\n\n<p>I\u2019d heard a bit of the scuttlebutt about how this film has proven to elicit mixed responses from moviegoers\u2014even though it\u2019s a hit with the critics (Certified Fresh!). <strong>Personally, I was floored.</strong> And I found myself feeling very emotional about it towards the end, no doubt as it resonated with some of my own very real and raw ups and downs in love.</p>\n\n<p>I would typically say a movie in this \u201cgenre\u201d isn\u2019t something you need to rush out to go see in movie theaters (wait for the streaming release). <strong>However, this is A24 we\u2019re talking about, with Academy Award nominee Celine Song at the helm.</strong></p>\n\n<p>Go see it.</p>",

From Andor to Empire

        "html": "<p>I\u2019ve been hanging out these past few days with my brother, and it just so happened he was in the process of finishing watching <em>Rogue One</em>. He hasn\u2019t seen <em>Andor</em> yet (I\u2019m doing my best to get him to queue it up!), but since he was about to continue on to <em>A New Hope</em>, I said I\u2019d watch it with him since I recently rewatched <em>Rogue One</em> after finishing <em>Andor</em>.</p>\n\n<p>Well\u2026obviously it goes without saying that the o.g. <em>Star Wars</em> is a true cinematic classic and a worthy achievement on so many levels. It\u2019s the one that begat all the rest. But wow, the tonal shift from the Tony Gilroy-led cinematic universe to the George Lucas starting point is startling. It leads you to wonder if we\u2019re even looking at the same story being told.</p>\n\n<p>But then we went right onward to <em>The Empire Strikes Back</em> and, wow, another major tonal shift! Now the truth is I\u2019m biased because I\u2019ve always considered this to be <strong>the best film by far</strong> out of all the SW <a href=\"https://jaredwhite.com/tag/movies\">#movies</a>. It\u2019s in a league unto itself. However, I was worried going into it that it still wouldn\u2019t gel with my raw feelings about the true modern masterpiece that is <em>Andor</em>.</p>\n\n<p><strong>I\u2019m happy to say that my concerns were unfounded.</strong></p>\n\n<p><em>The Empire Strikes Back</em> not only remains a masterpiece of <a href=\"https://jaredwhite.com/tag/scifi\">#SciFi</a> storytelling &amp; production, but it definitely feels like it pulls the threads well that were laid out in <em>Andor</em>. While of course the central plot points are about Luke Skywalker and Yoda and learning the ways of the Force and all that jazz, there\u2019s also this <strong>menacing sense of forboding</strong> throughout. The Empire is truly frightening, Darth Vader and the Emperor are truly terrifying, the Rebellion is back on its heels and struggling to survive; it feels like the march to freedom and justice is perched atop a knife\u2019s edge.</p>\n\n<p>The very title feels more fleshed out now: <em>The Empire Strikes Back</em>. In the first movie, we didn\u2019t know much about the Empire other than it had an ultimate weapon and the Senate was dissolved and then the rebels blew it up and the only one to make it out alive was Darth Vader. And even he remained quite the mystery.</p>\n\n<p>But with the backdrop of <em>Andor</em> (and <em>Rogue One</em>), we have such a weighty sense of just how despicable and \u201cinevitable\u201d the Empire seems, and in this sequel to the o.g. movie we continue to feel that awful formidability. It won\u2019t be until <em>Return of the Jedi</em> that we witness the dramatic downfall of the Empire and\u2026well, to be honest, all we really get to see is the dramatic downfall of the Emperor along with Death Star II (and a redemption arc of sorts for Darth Vader). Uh\u2026how exactly <em>does</em> the Empire get taken down for good, anyway? (Don\u2019t ask J.J. Abrams that!)</p>\n\n<p>That\u2019s a tale for another time though. Sorry.</p>\n\n<p>So hear me when I say <strong>my body is ready</strong> for the whole new slate of DCU <a href=\"https://jaredwhite.com/tag/movies\">#movies</a> with James Gunn at the helm (producing, and in the case of <em>Superman</em>, directing). I\u2019m not saying I love every single aspect of Gunn\u2019s comic book movie work to date, but there\u2019s no denying the <em>Guardians of the Galaxy</em> series was a massive success within the MCU, and <em>The Suicide Squad</em> was infinitely more entertaining than the previous <em>Suicide Squad</em> (a movie which I found near unwatchable).</p>\n\n<p>I am <strong>very excited</strong> for the new <em>Superman</em> movie and will of course go see it as soon as it\u2019s out in theaters.</p>",

If all your RSS feed does is post a one-liner saying you\u2019ve got an article up, you\u2019re wasting my time and missing the point. It\u2019s another delivery channel for your content. You wouldn\u2019t sign up people for a newsletter where you just send a message saying \u201cI\u2019ve got a new post up. Go read it.\u201d The same should apply to your RSS feed.\n\n\n\n\nRSS getting treated like an afterthought. Cool, you added some neat integration with some external service! Did you look to see what happens to those posts in your RSS feed? A lot of the time it\u2019s literally a blank post. Other times it\u2019s malformed junk missing any context of what\u2019s supposed to be there.\n\n\n\n\nRSS getting misconfigured. There\u2019s a lot of implementations of RSS feeds for different static site generators and blogging engines and CMS\u2019s out there, but a lot of them feel like they were implemented so they could add \u201cRSS support\u201d to their checklist. As a result, you get blogs where every time they make a new post, every single post on their site gets marked as updated in RSS. In most of the cases I\u2019ve bothered checking, basically the lastBuildDate is getting populated with the last date the site was built, rather than the last date that specific content was updated.\nI keep hoping some of these folks will fix their systems and approaches, but I think I\u2019m going to have to do a cull sometime soon. The investigation was launched weeks after the U.S. government deported Abrego Garcia and following a Supreme Court order and mounting pressure to return him.\n\nAbrego Garcia\u2019s lawyers told a judge Friday that some government witnesses cooperated to get favors regarding their immigration status or criminal charges they were facing. A federal agent acknowledged during his testimony that one witness was living in the U.S. illegally with a criminal record and is now getting preferred status.\n\n\n\nI\u2019m glad Abrego Garcia is finally able to stand his ground and experience the proper unfolding of our justice system and the rule of law. While he is only one man among hundreds who has faced horrendous rights abuse at the hands of the Trump regime, I hope his case continues to resonate with the public and shine a light on what\u2019s really going on.\n\nWhile I can\u2019t say with certainty Garcia is innocent of any and all crimes, the manner in which he has been accused certainly smells as fishy as a wharf on a hot day. I don\u2019t trust the prosecution as far as I could throw \u2018em."

Thankfully, to celebrate the 20th (!!) anniversary of the speech, the <strong>Steve Jobs Archive</strong> has remastered it for HD and it\u2019s available at the link.</p>\n\n<p>I couldn\u2019t get very far through it without tearing up; I basically cried through the rest of it. Jobs\u2019 personal <a href=\"https://jaredwhite.com/tag/spirituality\">#spirituality</a> and philosophy of how the realms of humanism (aka the \u201cliberal arts\u201d) and technology intersect has meant so much to me over the past couple of decades. Apparently in an interview a few years before this speech, Steve Jobs stated:</p>\n\n<p><strong>\u201cPeople sometimes forget that they are very unique and that they have very unique feelings and perspectives. The whole computer industry wants to forget about the humanist side.\u201d</strong></p>\n\n<p>I cannot think of a more appropriate perspective than right now as we watch with horror Big Tech companies across this industry utterly fail at the humanist side. <em>(Even Apple has been struggling!)</em></p>\n\n<p>And as I write this, on a day which has been unreservedly gutwrenching when it comes to domestic &amp; geopolitical news, I find comfort in the words of Steve Jobs: <strong>\u201cSometimes life\u2019s gonna hit you in the head with a brick. Don\u2019t lose faith.\u201d</strong></p>",
